The protein skimmer is an essential filtration device designed to efficiently remove organic waste from water. It comprises a reaction chamber, collection cup, venturi injector, and venturi pump. The skimming process relies on a simple yet highly effective principle known as protein fractionation.
Ozone and air are introduced into the water in the form of extremely fine bubbles through an ozone-resistant pressure venturi injector. As these bubbles travel through the reaction chamber, organic molecules-including proteins, amino acids, fatty acids, carbohydrates, enzymes, and other dissolved organic compounds-adhere to their surfaces at the air-water interface. The buoyant bubbles then rise through the water column, carrying the accumulated waste to the collection cup, where it is separated and discharged.
This process not only eliminates organic debris, algae, and protozoa but also aids in the removal of certain inorganic compounds, improving overall water quality. By efficiently extracting contaminants, the protein skimmer helps maintain a healthier aquatic environment, reducing the biological load on other filtration systems and enhancing water clarity. It is widely used in marine and freshwater aquaculture, public aquariums, and industrial water treatment applications.
